WHAT IS SMILE DESIGN?
Smile design aims to give a brand new smile to the person by restructuring the teeth and gums. This type of advanced cosmetic dentistry practices aim to bring an aesthetic smile to the person with the joint work of art and science.
Our smile, which is one of the most important youth criteria, loses its impressiveness with age. Teeth wear and shorten over time, and their color becomes darker. With this wear, the person’s face height (vertical dimension) decreases, the lips sag with the effect of gravity, the lip edges are wrinkled, the upper teeth are less visible and the lower teeth are more visible, giving the person an aged appearance. The person can have a much younger smile with applications such as vertical dimensioning, bonding, tooth whitening, laminate veneer, implant, adult orthodontics to the patient who applies to the dentist. Bad-looking old fillings that make people look older than they are, darkened and disjointed teeth disappear with this type of treatment. In many patients, lip wrinkles are reduced with a well-planned design, and thinning lips can be thickened.
So where should we start in order to make our smile aesthetic? Oral hygiene and gingival health of individuals who complain about their smile and want to change this situation are evaluated first. Afterwards, the face type is determined for the smile design and the most aesthetic tooth form that will fit the face shape is determined. Afterwards, intraoral and extraoral photographs are taken. These photos are transferred to the computer environment and a laughing line is determined by taking into account the special wishes of the individual. Then, the individual’s tooth-gingival relations are evaluated, if there are interdental contacts, crowding is checked. At this stage, the patient is asked what kind of smile he or she wants. If a young, attractive smile is desired, the front teeth are made noticeably longer than the side teeth. In young individuals, the teeth are already like this. As the person ages, the front teeth wear out, their length becomes shorter and this gives the person an old expression. If the person desires a more mature and intellectual smile, the teeth are designed in a more horizontal straight line. Teeth that are different in length at young ages are more equal in size in middle age. Designs should be made according to the personality traits and profession of the individual. Mock-up (temporary model) work is done with tooth-colored materials before starting any process on the teeth. Thanks to the mock-up, the person is shown how their teeth will look when the treatment is finished, without cutting the teeth or undergoing any procedure. If the person wishes, he can continue the treatment, if he wishes, he can give up the treatment.
